  19. <p>Six pols are prison bound
  20. </p>
  21. <p>     A defense lawyer decried the "mass condemnation proceedings,"
  22. but New York Federal District Court Judge George Pratt was
  23. unmoved. Pratt ordered jail terms for six former elected
  24. officials convicted of bribery and conspiracy, the first
  25. sentences handed down in the Justice Department's Abscam
  26. operation.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     Four are former U.S. Representatives; Frank Thompson, 63, of
  29. New Jersey, might avoid jail because of a heart condition:
  30. final sentencing will await medical test results. The three
  31. other ex-Congressmen were each given $20,000 fines, and
  32. multiple prison terms to be served concurrently. New York's
  33. John Murphy, 55, received a three-year and two-year terms.
  34. Michael Myers, 38, was given three three-year terms, and fellow
  35. Philadelphian Raymond Lederer, 43, racked up three terms of
  36. three years and another of two years.

  38. <p>     Two officials who shared in the spoils were also punished.
  39. Philadelphia City Councilman Louis Johanson, 52, received the
  40. same sentence as Myers. Because of his extensive involvement,
  41. New Jersey State Senator Angelo Errichetti received the
  42. harshest sentence: one six-year term, two five-year terms and
  43. $40,000 in fines. Under parole guidelines, each of the six must
  44. serve at least 14 months. All plan to appeal. </p>
